๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ป ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐˜€๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐˜€: Introduction to Prehistoric Textiles Course. ๐—ข๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ-๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ผ ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€, plus live forum support, we will explore the current evidence for prehistoric textiles with a focus on Northern Europe, whilst getting to grips with tools, techniques, and practical projects that are both illustrative of early evidence and relevant to modern craft practice. The required materials are fairly easy to obtain, and substitutions will be suggested. ๐—ฌ๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐˜„๐—ถ๐—น๐—น ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป: โœ… A small piece of antler, bone, or a piece of close-grained wood to make a needle and awl with. โœ… Some fine string. โœ… Flax or hemp fibres (other foraged fibres like nettle. โœ… Dogbane or similar will be fine, too. โœ… Some lime bast or raffia, a small amount of clay (self-hardening is fine). โœ… A stick or two, and a small amount of sheepโ€™s wool. Anything else is amongst typical household supplies. By the end of the course, you will have a working understanding of when and how key textile technologies arrived, the principles of working with some of these techniques, and insights into how this informs modern craft practice and textile production today. ๐—ก๐—ผ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ธ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜„๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜€๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ, and there will be a handout with key points, references, and suggested further reading for those wanting to explore further.
