ABOUT
𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀: Introduction to Prehistoric Textiles Course. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲-𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀, plus live forum support, we will explore the current evidence for prehistoric textiles with a focus on Northern Europe, whilst getting to grips with tools, techniques, and practical projects that are both illustrative of early evidence and relevant to modern craft practice. The required materials are fairly easy to obtain, and substitutions will be suggested. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗯𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻: ✅ A small piece of antler, bone, or a piece of close-grained wood to make a needle and awl with. ✅ Some fine string. ✅ Flax or hemp fibres (other foraged fibres like nettle. ✅ Dogbane or similar will be fine, too. ✅ Some lime bast or raffia, a small amount of clay (self-hardening is fine). ✅ A stick or two, and a small amount of sheep’s wool. Anything else is amongst typical household supplies. By the end of the course, you will have a working understanding of when and how key textile technologies arrived, the principles of working with some of these techniques, and insights into how this informs modern craft practice and textile production today. 𝗡𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗱, and there will be a handout with key points, references, and suggested further reading for those wanting to explore further. This course works well in parallel with my recent 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲, which is also hosted on this site, but does not repeat specific projects from it, and can reinforce skills learnt here.
